We Test Every Lot Of Celtic Sea Salt®
Celtic Sea Salt ®- What You Need To Know
Celtic Sea Salt® is loved by health and wellness professionals, chefs and families for its excellent flavor in cooking and seasoning, and believed to play a role in a healthy, restorative lifestyle. Since 1976, we've remained true to our roots by providing you with unrefined salt with natural occurring trace minerals and elements.
For nearly 50 years, Celtic Sea Salt® has remained unrefined just the way it’s meant to be. It’s carefully and sustainably harvested from local artisans from beautiful coastal regions in France, Spain, Portugal, Guatemala, Mexico, and Hawaii. Some of the salt beds we use are more than 1,000 years old and it can take up to seven years to build the right ecosystem for truly great salt. That kind of care is what helps us bring you a naturally occurring blend of essential minerals and trace elements—not just for better flavor, but believed to support a healthy lifestyle, too. It’s no wonder health professionals love it, and many believe it supports better hydration and supports a healthy electrolyte balance.
Since our sea salt comes straight from the earth, it naturally contains a variety of trace elements—including small amounts of elements like lead and arsenic, which might sound concerning.
But we test every lot carefully to ensure our lead levels are well below thresholds set by the United States Food and Drug Administration and international standards (Codex Alimentarius), and we are compliant with California Prop 65. In fact, the levels of lead in a serving of Celtic Sea Salt® are lower than those in other healthy root vegetables such as sweet potatoes and beets.

Your Questions Answered
Is there lead and arsenic in Celtic Sea Salt®? How long has this been going on?
We are passionate to bring Celtic Sea Salt® to you just the way nature made it – that’s one reason it’s loved by chefs, wellness seekers and families worldwide. Like many naturally occurring products, it does contain small amounts of trace elements like lead and arsenic. But rest assured, these levels are below the safety limits set by California’s Prop 65, the FDA, and Codex international guidelines. We genuinely care about your well-being, so we test our salt thoroughly to make sure it stays that way.
We have remained true to our roots since 1976, making unrefined salt just the way nature intended – with natural minerals. Our salt hasn’t changed over the years, and those trace minerals and elements have always been a natural part of it.
I’ve seen reports that Celtic Sea Salt® is being sued in California. Is this true?
While we take any lawsuit seriously, we are extremely confident in the quality and safety of our products and the levels of lead that naturally occur in our salt. While we cannot discuss litigation, we stand by the safety of Celtic Sea Salt®; our continuous testing also proves it.
Because we test every lot we produce, we know our lead levels average 489 ppb and our arsenic levels average 106 ppb. This is below guidelines set by the United States Food and Drug Administration and international standards (Codex Alimentarius), and we are compliant with California Prop 65.
Is naturally occurring lead the same as pure lead exposure?
Our salt has trace minerals and elements – that’s what makes it so good! As with anything that comes from the earth, it has trace amounts of substances that wouldn’t be good in large quantities. This is true for all naturally derived salts, not just Celtic Sea Salt®. You can feel confident that the levels in our salt are safe for you.
It appears that the lead and arsenic levels in your sea salt are high. Can you explain this?
Maximum limits aren’t the same for everything – relative levels depend on how much of something people eat or drink and who is consuming it. That’s why baby food has the strictest standard, water has a modest one, and salt has a higher allowable limit.
So, is Celtic Sea Salt® safe?
We are confident in the safety of our products. We wouldn’t share them with you otherwise. We take a more natural approach, our product is unrefined as nature intended — free of chemical additives, anti-caking agents or bleaching. Because it’s unrefined and comes from the earth, it does have small amounts of trace elements such as lead and arsenic. But our salts are all well below the safety guidelines set by Codex Alimentarius (the only regulatory body to have provided specific lead guidance).
