Selina Naturally® Reaffirms Product Safety After Consumer Concerns About Lead in Celtic Sea Salt®
Selina Naturally®, the originator of Celtic Sea Salt®, reassures consumers that its products are safe and do not contain excessive or dangerous levels of lead. Recently, there has been some confusion about the comparison of the lead content in a serving size (¼ tsp) of Celtic Sea Salt® to the recommended levels guided by the FDA for processed baby food products. Selina Naturally® shares concerns about lead and its impact on health. Children are less likely to consume a ¼ teaspoon serving of Celtic Sea Salt® but more likely to eat multiple servings of processed baby food products daily.
Selina Naturally® has never claimed zero lead in its products. In fact, third-party scientific testing shows that a serving size (¼ tsp) of Fine Ground Celtic Sea Salt® contains 0.637 μg (micrograms) of lead, Light Grey Celtic Sea Salt® has 0.630 μg, Gourmet Kosher Celtic Sea Salt® contains .00003 μg, while in Makai Pure® Celtic Sea Salt® lead is not detected. Therefore, a child consuming one serving of one of these salt types remains well below the FDA's Interim Reference Level (IRL) of 2.2 μg of lead per day. The FDA uses the IRL to assess potential health risks from food contaminants.
The FDA requires Selina Naturally® to control any hazards associated with food items processed and/or packed at the company’s North Carolina facility. The only known hazard for all salt is the possible high concentrations of heavy metals (e.g., lead). That’s why Selina Naturally® mandates its suppliers to test each lot of salt before shipment. Additionally, farmers are also required to test clay beds, where Celtic Sea Salt® varieties could absorb some lead during the drying process; these procedures are essential parts of their quality control program.
Lead is a naturally occurring element found in the earth’s crust and is often present in produce. During the growing process, fruits and vegetables absorb whatever is in the soil, whether it’s a nutrient or pollutant. The EPA emphasizes the presence of an element–or contaminant–such as lead does not mean food is unsafe to eat. Federal health officials, doctors, and scientists have yet to pinpoint a safe level of lead exposure.
Selina Naturally® understands consumer concerns about the safety of the products they use daily. While appreciating those who raise these concerns, Selina Naturally® aims to provide clarity and reassurance to its valued customers and would never sell a product that wasn’t safe. Ultimately, consumers have the final decision, and if they are uncomfortable with these trace levels, they may consider Makai Pure® Celtic Sea Salt®, which has zero lead detected.
