Surrounded by the Cascade Mountains and thousands of miles of national forest, Upper Klamath Lake is home to a unique type of blue green algae. The scientific name for this algae is Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA), which translates from Latin to “invisible living flower of the water.” The historic use of algae as a food source is well documented in many cultures, including Japan, Mexico and Africa. Scientific research conducted over the last two decades now suggests that blue-green algae may have medicinal value as well. AFA is currently being explored as an alternative treatment for a myriad of health conditions including depression, ADD, chronic fatigue, high blood pressure, poor memory, skin disorders and rheumatoid diseases. See our Spring 2004 newsletter for more information on the health benefits of algae.
