Update: (12/16/08)
A new study published in Diabetologia indicates that
vitamin B1 (thiamine) supplements may protect the health of kidneys in type 2 diabetic patients.
One in three diabetics suffer from kidney damage. When small amounts of albumin, the most abundant protein in human serum, leaks from the kidney into the urine a condition known as microalbuminuria occurs. Microalbuminuria is an indicator of early kidney disease development in diabetics.
In experimental diabetes in animals, high-dose supplements of thiamine prevented the development of microalbuminuria. Consequently, researchers decided to take the research one step farther by conducting a pilot study to assess whether oral supplements of thiamine could reverse microalbuminuria in patients with type 2 diabetes.
The study authors concluded, “In this pilot study, high-dose thiamine therapy produced a regression of UAE in type 2 diabetic patients with microalbuminuria. Thiamine supplements at high dose may provide improved therapy for early-stage diabetic nephropathy.”
The results are consistent with earlier research reported by the same researchers, which found that vitamin B1 supplements may improve vascular health in diabetics. Other researchers have found that thiamine concentrations in the blood plasma of both type 1 and 2 diabetics are decreased by approximately 75 percent.
